Almaty Airport: gateway to Kazakhstan and the Tian Shan

Almaty International Airport (ALA) is the largest airport in Central Asia: around 12 million passengers in 2025 and roughly 37% of Kazakhstan's air traffic pass through it. The airport is majority-owned by TAV Airports (an 85% stake) and serves as the home hub of Air Astana.

The new international terminal T2 opened in June 2024 and carries a Skytrax 4-Star rating, while the older T1 now handles domestic flights. The terminals sit about 15 km from the centre of Almaty, with the Tian Shan foothills rising directly behind the city.

Traffic is growing fast on the back of visa liberalisation: services between Kazakhstan and China have expanded to as many as 32 flights a week, and the country counted over 690,000 Chinese visitors in 2025.

Transport

City buses, ride-hailing apps, the official taxi desk and pre-booked transfers. Buses 79, 86, 92 and 106 link the airport with the city for roughly 120 KZT, night bus No. 3 covers the small hours, and a Bolt or Yandex Go car to the centre runs 2,000–2,500 KZT. There is no rail link — and the one thing worth knowing in advance is the fixed-fare desk in arrivals, your defence against the drivers waiting at the exit.

Visa-free entry and transit

Kazakhstan has opened up quickly: citizens of China enter visa-free for up to 30 days, citizens of India and Iran for up to 14 days, Turkey for 90, and most EU, UK and US passports get 30. Each of those also carries a cumulative cap per 180 days. Staying airside between international flights is possible for up to 24 hours without any visa. I land between midnight and 05:00 — how do I get to the city?

Three realistic options: night bus No. 3 (runs ≈22:00–06:00, roughly every 45 minutes; pay with an Onay card, the app or your mobile operator), a Bolt or Yandex Go car if you have working mobile data (2,000–2,500 KZT plus night surcharges), or the official fixed-fare taxi desk in arrivals (4,000–6,000 KZT, fixed before you ride). Night landings are normal at ALA — most flights from China and Europe arrive in the small hours.

How much is Bolt or Yandex Go from the airport?

Usually 2,000–2,500 KZT to central Almaty (checked July 2026), more at night or in high demand. Both apps generally need mobile data and a registered account, and Yandex Go may want a working local number — sort out a SIM or eSIM first, or use the fixed-fare desk for the first ride.

How do I avoid the airport taxi scam?

Know the fair numbers before the doors open: app price 2,000–2,500 KZT, official desk 4,000–6,000 KZT fixed. If a driver at the exit quotes more than 6,000 KZT to the centre, walk away. Travellers report rides quoted at 2,000 KZT that ended with a 25,000 KZT demand — never ride on a vague verbal price.

Where do I buy an Onay card?

In the city, kiosks and supermarkets sell and top them up. At the airport, do not count on a sales point being open — no published source confirms a round-the-clock Onay counter, least of all at night.

How do I change between T1 and T2?

T1 handles domestic flights, T2 (opened June 2024) international ones. They stand next to each other on the same landside area, so the change is a short walk — follow the signage, and allow extra time if your connection involves collecting and re-checking luggage.

Can I transit through ALA without a visa?

Yes — up to 24 hours airside, as long as you stay inside the international zone and hold a confirmed onward ticket.
