How to get from Almaty Airport to the city

The airport is about 15 km from the centre of Almaty and there is no rail link, so every trip comes down to a bus, an app or a car arranged in advance. The price board below is the point of this page: taxi overcharging at the arrivals exit is the most common complaint travellers post about ALA, and knowing the honest numbers is the best defence. One fare, and it is cashless: 120 KZT per ride paid with an Onay transport card, with the app, or through your mobile operator — set by the Almaty akimat in decree No. 3/412 of 22 July 2024. That decree names no cash fare, so do not plan on paying the driver in notes.

The taxi problem: know the fair price before the doors open

The drivers waiting at the arrivals exit are the single most reported problem at ALA. Recent traveller reports include rides that were quoted at 2,000 KZT and ended with a demand for 25,000 KZT at the destination. The same ride ordered through Bolt or Yandex Go costs 2,000–2,500 KZT.

One rule covers everything: if a driver quotes more than 6,000 KZT to the centre, walk away — go to the official fixed-fare desk in the arrivals hall (4,000–6,000 KZT, fixed before you get in) or order the car in an app.

Never get into a car on a vague verbal price. Agree the total in tenge before the doors close — or better, ride only on a price fixed in writing: the receipt from the official desk or the fare shown in the app.

The apps have their own catch: Bolt and Yandex Go generally need mobile data and a registered account, and Yandex Go may want a working local number. Sort out a SIM or eSIM before you leave the terminal, or use the fixed-fare desk for your first ride.

Arriving between midnight and 05:00

A large share of ALA's international arrivals — including most flights from China and Europe — land in the small hours. A midnight landing here is normal, not bad luck, and the airport works through the night.

Night bus No. 3 runs roughly 22:00 to 06:00 at about 45-minute intervals. It works if the timetable lines up with your exit from the terminal and you already have a way to pay — do not count on buying an Onay card in the airport at 3 a.m.

App fares carry night and demand surcharges, and you still need data and a registered account at the kerb. Landing at night with luggage or a family, the fixed-fare desk or a pre-booked transfer with flight tracking is the option that cannot fall through.

The Onay card: where to get one at the airport

Onay is Almaty’s transport card, and 120 KZT with it is the cheapest way into the city. The catch: no published source confirms a round-the-clock Onay sales point at the airport, so do not build your plan around buying one on arrival — least of all at night.

The same 120 KZT can be paid with the Onay mobile app or through your mobile operator, which is what to fall back on if you land without the card. Those three methods are the ones the city’s fare decree names.

What the decree does not name is a cash fare, so do not count on paying the driver in notes. Once in the city, kiosks and supermarkets sell and top up Onay cards.
