Almaty Airport to Shymbulak: the ski transfer guide
Shymbulak is the reason many winter arrivals pick Almaty at all: a full ski resort about 36 km from the terminal, above the Medeu ice rink, with a season that normally runs from about November to April. No scheduled service covers the plane-to-slope link in one ride — the realistic options are below.
Prices verified July 2026 — resort and cable-car tariffs change each season; check before you travel.
Three ways up
| Option | Price | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yandex Go / Bolt from the airport | ≈7,000 KZT | About an hour outside rush hour; Almaty traffic at peak can double it | You need the app working at the kerb (data, registered account). Most cars drop at Medeu; the cable car covers the last leg up |
| Pre-booked private transfer | From about €39 | Same road, but the driver meets your flight | Removes the SIM/app problem on arrival entirely; the sensible pick with ski luggage or a night landing |
| Via the city: bus to the centre → bus No. 12 to Medeu → cable car | Bus fares 120 KZT per leg, plus the cable car | The slow option — allow half a day | Cheapest by far. |
Worth knowing
- Timing: outside rush hour the drive takes about an hour; at peak, the road through the city can double that. For a same-day landing-to-slopes connection, leave a wide margin.
- There is no through public transport from the airport to the resort — every route involves either a car or a change in the city.
- The cable car from Medeu is the standard final leg: the road above Medeu is restricted for most private vehicles, so even arriving by taxi you will usually ride the gondola for the last stretch.
- Check the resort's own site for lift hours and current tariffs before committing to a day trip.
